Decarbonizing road freight transport in emerging countries

Decarbonizing logistics and road freight transport (RFT) to achieve goals of Net Zero by 2050 is one of the most relevant topics nowadays and in the upcoming years. Predicting future scenarios and designing a suitable road map for decarbonizing RFT in emerging countries can be a complex phenomenon. The research is aimed to answer questions about the barriers and challenges to decarbonize RFT and their relationship with policymaking. Therefore, this research is divided into three papers: a) The first paper seeks to explore different elements such as barriers, drivers, or any element that contributes to the decarbonization of Road Freight Transport (RFT) within the context of Colombia as an emerging country. b) The second paper aims to construct a relational model of factors from the elements found in the first paper and find their relations and possible contradictions to reduce emissions of road freight transport in Colombia. and c) the third paper is designed to conduct research on the policy to decarbonize RFT from the perspective of the public sector in emerging countries.

Andrés Felipe Rey started the PhD program at KLU in September 2022 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gordon Wilmsmeier and Prof. Dr. Johannes Meuer. His research focuses on decarbonizing road freight transportation in emerging countries. He has the opportunity to gather some qualitative data while working in the GiroZero project about decarbonization of freight transportation in Colombia. Before joining the PhD program at KLU, Andrés received a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from ICESI University with a certification of Supply Chain Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from National University of Colombia. Previously, he has 18 years of experience in the supply chain field. In the private sector, he has worked as leader of operations and implementation projects in supply chains in countries such as Colombia, Panama and Venezuela. In the public sector, he has experience as Senior Consultant for the National Planning Department (DNP) with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and as advisory and project contributor for multilateral banking such as the World Bank for Bolivia, IDB for Peru, CAF for Panama, and ICLEI for Colombia.
