Stadtpark Open Air

Spanning across genres from soul and hip-hop to jazz and classical music, Stadtpark Open Air caters to a variety of music tastes. Nestled within the scenic landscapes of Hamburg, this event unites music and nature in a verdant outdoor venue. This event has evolved since its conception in about 1915, when rain or shine, the concerts went on. One new addition will particularly interest you if you are also a fan of comedy and poetry, as the open air features stand-up comedy shows and poetry slams as well. Here, you will discover up-and-coming artists and comedians, as well as some familiar names like ONEREPUBLIC, Jessie J and Olivia Rodrigo! With headliners like these, you will want to grab your tickets for the cherished highlight of the Hamburg summer experience.

Reeperbahn Festival

If you have not yet discovered the unique atmosphere of the Reeperbahn, here is your chance! Discover a different side of the street known for its electrifying nightlife through the power of music. Reeperbahn Festival, a fusion of the best music, art, and culture, brings together talented artists from all different backgrounds and genres. These creative geniuses showcase their crafts in various unique (and oftentimes unconventional) venues throughout the area. The 4-day festival takes place in September and even has some influence overseas, so if you ever find yourself in New York City, be on the lookout for some Hamburg natives eager to expand their footprint in the global music landscape.

Naje Festival

The home of Afro-French soul, reggae, and Afro-House in Hamburg is none other than Naje Festival. The word Naje, which means “narrate” or “tell” in Arabic, captures the essence of this pan-African music festival, which beautifully unveils the narratives and creative expressions of the artists. Every June, this festival will deliver you the transcendent sounds of Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and many more countries. Beyond its musical allure, this event is also a great place to indulge in some new cuisine and shop for striking ensembles and accessories. You will also be captivated by the acrobatic and dance performances and other exhibitions in this bridging of cultures.

Hamburg International Music Festival

Did somebody say five weeks of concerts? Yes, we did! The Hamburg International Music Festival begins in April and offers more than 30 different classical music concerts by musicians and conductors from all over the world. With featured artists from Taiwan, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and beyond, this event transcends language barriers and borders and showcases the universality of music. The energy of the festival’s orchestras reaches far and wide and the melodies will evoke many emotions during this auditory world tour. The festival truly embodies the international harmony of the city by taking attendees on an enriching journey through the global symphony of sound.

Spektrum Festival

Come celebrate the diversity of hip-hop and electronic music with over 8,000 other fans of music, digital arts, and immersive exhibitions. Spektrum Festival unites old and new sounds of the genres every August. Since its conception in 2012, this festival has propelled the art of Hamburg hip-hop to the forefront of the German rap and hip-hop scene and has elevated the boundaries of music through experimental soundscapes and unconventional, thought-provoking, and engaging installations. With over twenty different acts, this show is bound to create a unique and cutting-edge experience and exemplify the creativity and innovation that gives Hamburg its zest.

Wacken Open Air

If you are a true metal or a hard rock fan, we highly recommend the truly unparalleled Wacken Open Air (W:O:A). Every August, the serene village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein (about an hour outside of Hamburg) is transformed into a thunderous mecca for the week-long event. One of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world, W:O:A has grown from a modest 800 visitors in 1990 to over 85,000 headbangers from all corners of the globe today. If the music and exciting energy of this concert do not win you over, the creative outfits and makeup looks certainly will! It is not only notorious for its lineup, which reads like a metal half of fame, but also for giving its attendees the opportunity to connect with the culture and lifestyle associated with the genre in a pilgrimage to the metal heartland.

Schlagermove

Welcome to Germany, the home of Schlager music! It’s about time you ventured to Schlagermove, a jubilant explosion of music, colors, and nostalgia and the biggest Schlager festival in Germany. This 25-year-old festival transforms the streets of Hamburg into a dance floor jam-packed with 500,000 festivalgoers (so be sure to get there early!). Every July, the infectious power of Schlager floods the city and captures the hearts of many. If your German skills allow, sing along! If not, we are sure the pumping bass and energy of the dance-offs and singalongs will draw you into the cheerful parade of people adorning retro costumes.

International Salsa Festival

No festival is complete without a bit of dancing, or rather, a lot of dancing. The International Salsa Festival is a lively cultural experience filled with dazzling performances and energetic dance sessions. Join salsa dancers, teachers, and enthusiasts from all over the world for this 3-day festival, which showcases everything from traditional salsa to contemporary interpretations. No experience? No problem! Some of the best-trained salsa instructors in the world will be there to guide you so that you will be on your way to becoming a salsa pro by the end of summer. Whether you are a salsa aficionado or just looking to get the basic steps down, this festival will immerse you into the salsa world, full of people with a passion for movement and music.

Habitat Festival

For our techno, house, DnB, and electronic lovers, the Habitat Festival is the place to be. This 2-day summer soiree, which is hosted in southern Hamburg, lasts not three, not four, but thirty-two hours nonstop, so make sure you get your rest in beforehand. However, you won’t just be surrounded by the pulsating dance floors, but also ambient chill-out zones. This inclusive festival ignites a sense of community and wonder that allows its attendees the chance to feel inspired and transformed. Its unwavering commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness is the icing on the cake, as it emphasizes the true harmony between human expression and the natural world.

Elbjazz Festival

Finally, we will wrap this tour up with yet another unique festival. Whether you are a fan of the saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or bass, you will find it all at Elbjazz Festival. This international musical melting pot, held against the city’s stunning waterfront, graces Hamburg every June and features performances in the Elbphilharmonie concert house, jazz clubs and cafes, and even a church (How many people can say they went to a jazz concert in a church??). In a world where the city’s maritime charm meets the eclectic world of jazz, the festival encompasses the diversity of the jazz world. Open to all artists, beloved and fresh on the scene, this festival is one that certainly will not leave you with the blues.
