HafenCity again sampled a taste of Tinseltown on 9 October as the red carpet was rolled out for the 3rd annual KLU Movie Night. In total 28 short films written, directed and produced by KLU MSc students were entered into the competition, with winners taking home coveted KLU movie prizes.
All the films on display at the KLU Movie Night were made by small teams of masters students as part of Professors Niels Van Quaquebeke and Christian Trösters' Leadership and Organisational Behaviour course, which aims to enable students to understand humans and human interaction in organisation better.
Not that their efforts were limited to the filmmaking process, with the Movie Night event itself also organised entirely by the MSc students.
"It is part of the philosophy of the flipped classroom that course content should come to life. To this end, we assigned the students to diverse teams,” explained Prof Van Quaquebeke of the filmmaking project. “This helped them to understand what it means to work together interdependently across different cultures. And they also had to decide how to proceed as a team to ultimately achieve the common objective: producing a great movie.”
The results spoke for themselves, with a collection of fantastic films covering the influence of psychology in the business world based on topics such as motivation, decision-making, intelligence, and justice. Themes including stress, prejudice, and discrimination were also dealt with in the films, which emcompassed a rich variety of genres, from thrillers to love stories, and even included an / some animated productions.
“The KLU Movie Night nicely reflects the experiential and student centred learning approach of our class,” remarked Professor Tröster afterwards. “By producing a movie students have to understand the leadership and organisational behaviour related content and apply it to a relevant context. On the side, they also learn how to make a movie and we have seen some real talents. Who knows but we might soon see some of our students in Hollywood.”
The films certainly proved a great hit with the 120 or so people that gathered to watch and applaud the students, their films, and the winners. KLU Move Night prizes were awarded in six different categories from Best Film to Best Make-Up, and the event was followed by an After Show party on a night fast becoming a highlight of the KLU calendar.
