Proper organizational structure is necessary if a company aims to successfully implement its strategy, operate efficiently, and create sustainable value for its stakeholders. This course will provide students with an overview of the theory of organization, what organization structures exist, how structure and strategy link, and how one goes about designing an effective organization. In particular, we will look at different design options, their respective strengths, and weaknesses, and when they should be chosen for an organization. We will then look ‘behind the organization chart’ to reveal an organization’s informal structure and learn how it complements an organization’s formal structure. You should take away from the course an understanding of what makes an organization effective in terms of its structure and how they can use this knowledge to improve their organization’s performance.
